Two hip-hop classics are among 27 new recordings being inducted into the Grammy’s Hall of Fame Class of 2014. The Academy has announced that Sugarhill Gang’s “Rapper’s Delight” and Run-DMC’s “Walk this Way” will have a place in the Grammy Museum in downtown Los Angeles next year.
Both commercial offerings helped the genre crossover into the mainstream during a time its relevance was largely doubted. Despite each song’s cultural significance, neither “Walk this Way”[89] nor “Rapper’s Delight”[36] reached higher than 30 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart.
“Spanning the 1930s to the 1980s, this year’s Grammy Hall Of Fame entries represent a diverse collection of influential and historically significant recordings,” Neil Portnow, President/CEO of The Recording Academy, said. “These recordings are proudly added to our growing catalog — knowing that they have become a part of our musical, social and cultural history.”
In addition to Run DMC and the Sugarhill Gang, the Grammys will honor songs by James Brown, Chicago, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Miles Davis, B.J. Thomas, Neil Young and more.
